Call to put more effort into developing Belarusian chemical industry

06.11.2018

MOGILEV, 6 November (BelTA) – The development of the chemical industry in Belarus should become a national project, BelTA learned from Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich on 6 November.

The head of the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament was made familiar with the implementation of the investment project designed to start making technical carbon in IOOO Omsk Carbon Mogilev. Prospects of modernization of OAO Mogilevkhimvolokno were also reviewed.

“If we don’t seriously develop the chemical industry, we may lose competitive edge and the industry,” believes Mikhail Myasnikovich. He praised the large-scale ongoing modernization in OAO Mogilevkhimvolokno and other Belarusian chemical companies. “The development of the chemical industry should become a national project, which will allow making many chemical synthesis products in Belarus,” Mikhail Myasnikovich said.

Belarus imports $2 billion worth of polymeric products per year on the average. Scientists and chemical industry specialists believe that local enterprises can make 50% of what the country needs to import. Massive investments are necessary to make it happen. “It is necessary to build complicated installations and survive tough market competition. Instead of catching up we should invest in staying ahead,” said Mikhail Myasnikovich. Foreign investments were mentioned as a possible source of money. “We can get partners and access to modern technologies, information, and new markets like that,” noted the senator.

In his words, there are plans to arrange a science and practice conference at premises of the Belarusian State Technological University soon in order to discuss the matter. Mikhail Myasnikovich is in favor of inviting Russian partners and Western companies with expertise in the field for the sake of developing the Belarusian chemical industry.
